Training in the martial arts does not mean you should automatically injure your body on a regular basis. The injuries I'm referring to include self-inflicted injuries from over training, injuries from improper body dynamics, and body abuse, as well as those injuries inflicted by others.
The chances of you sustaining a long-term injury, and/or damage to your body from your martial arts, are high, if not unavoidable, if you don't deepen your awareness of the intentions and design behind your art.
Almost all of the martial arts were designed for the purpose of intense combat situations, protection, and attack. They were developed to neutralize an attacker, avoid violence if possible, and then engage in life or death battle as a last resort.
While some martial arts (Tai Chi, Bagua, Hsing I, Tibetan Arts, Mantis, Southern Shaolin systems & many more which I will include in other discussions), do have a healing or internal component, the majority of the arts practised today do not. They were not conceived from the consciousness or mindset of protecting and strengthening the internal components of the body. Some of these martial arts that do not have an internally designed healing component include:
Below are some basic scientific examples of body damage that can have a long-term effect from training in an art that is not in alignment with the body's needs. I will go into a much more elaborate discussion of each art and its benefits and detriments in the next section. Keep in mind, there are obvious damages that are clear to any trained eye, and there are more subtler damages that deal with body electricity, organ-signaling and internal communication systems.
My intent is to help you understand how to train better in your art, deter you from avoidable injuries, and help you create a new connection to wellness and balance in your training.
Martial Arts Imbalances:
While many of these arts are effective and can include warmups, breathing and even some basic forms of meditation, they are still going against and challenging the body in unusual ways that, if not understood how to minimize, will leave many with crippling injuries, poor organ function and much more.
Long term damages can include: ligaments damaged beyond repair, joint
dysplasia, arthritis, auto-immune conditions, postural irregularities, behavioral imbalances, back and spine injuries, neck injuries, emotional imbalances, headaches, eye and nerve complications, nervous system diseases.
Poor training can also take place beyond the physical into the mental, emotional and spiritual paradigms.
Martial arts, expressing itself as fighting domination, enforcing the need to win, making oneself feel more powerful by being in control over others, is a bastardization of the art forms. That type of training creates a false sense of power and ends up moving one further away from the connection and humility within needed to access one's greatest forces.
Addictions to alcohol, violence, porn, sex, winning, or any toxic substance, are all imbalances that can be addressed through the proper balance of the organism with the martial mastery of one's internal forces.
The most powerful forces we access are unconditional giving forces related to offering energy from the core. They cannot be accessed from the mindset of wanting to take another's energy, destroy or win. The need to win is only in a life and death situation which should be avoided at all costs using smart strategies from your martial arts.
Authentic martial arts self mastery, creates healing and balance in multiple areas using the depths of one's own forces. However, that can be a difficult task to achieve if the very nature of your art is creating internal imbalances of the body/mind and psyche.

PROTECTION THROUGH DESTRUCTION?? 🧐
The first and only goal of martial arts is to protect yourself and those around you. Protection covers all arenas, not just in fighting.
Martial arts can be exhilarating! Pushing and moving your body in ways that never even occurred to your mind were possible, let alone effective. Making yourself feel powerful and flexible and strong ,while building skills and deep confidence that you will know how to respond in a situation if you are threatened or challenged, can be a great relief. In a world where danger and unpredictability can be the norm, training in the martial arts can give you the edge to both avoid dangerous situations but also have better odds to prevail if you must engage.
However, while learning the skills to dismantle or neutralize an attacker, one cannot consistently destroy one's own body or the body of a training partner.
Making the body a weapon can work in both ways; it can make the body extremely weak, or extremely strong ,depending on how you use the body and its correct alignments.
Imagine if soldiers were shooting each other for real in training, or if each time you stepped on the mat to learn self defense you were unknowingly creating imbalances that would actually make you weaker in a fight, or potentially even damage your body to the point where your health would be at stake later on.
That scenario would be a direct conflict with the first principle of the martial arts, which is to protect oneself. There are countless examples of body destruction that we often unknowingly violate while training. Below are a few of the less obivous ones.
